A lawful permanent resident (LPR) is someone with a legally obtained a Permanent Resident Card, I-551 – commonly known as the “Green Card”.

A Green Card is given as a proof that a person is granted permanent residency in the U.S. A person with a Green Card has a right to live and take employment in the United States permanently and may eventually become a United States citizen. Non-U.S citizens can become a permanent resident in several different ways. Some are sponsored by a family member, some are sponsored by their employer in the United States, while others may become permanent residents through a refugee or asylee status or other humanitarian programs.

The previous design of Permanent Resident Card or Green Card was discontinued in May 2010, but the card is still valid to those who are currently holding them, until its expiration date. The new Green Card design is colored green for easy recognition. It now matches to its nickname “Green Card”. The new Permanent Resident Card or Green Card is in a more secure format to deter immigration fraud.
